About the Nikon F Photomic FTN 35mm Camera

The Nikon F Photomic FTN is a 35mm single-lens reflex camera introduced in 1959 and equipped with the Photomic FTN prism finder, which was manufactured between 1968 and 1974. The camera features a fully mechanical titanium-foil focal plane shutter with speeds from 1 second to 1/1000, plus Bulb and Time modes, combined with manual aperture control and interchangeable focusing screens. The Photomic FTN prism provides 60% center-weighted through-the-lens metering with a cadmium sulfide meter and displays shutter speeds in the viewfinder, a significant advancement that became the standard for Nikon cameras for decades.

The Nikon F system is highly modular, supporting interchangeable viewfinders, focusing screens, and motor drives, along with a wide range of lenses covering 21mm to 1000mm focal lengths. The camera body is equipped with a depth-of-field preview button, mirror lock-up capability, and a fully removable back that can be replaced with optional 250-exposure or Polaroid film backs. Built to professional standards and famously rugged, the Nikon F became the first 35mm SLR widely adopted by professional photojournalists and was even modified for use by NASA astronauts during the Apollo 15 mission.
