The Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 is a 16.2-megapixel digital camera featuring Sony's innovative translucent mirror technology, which enables fast phase-detection autofocus during both still photography and Full HD video recording. The camera is equipped with a 3-inch tiltable LCD screen with 921,000 dots and an electronic viewfinder, both supporting real-time live view with continuous autofocus and autoexposure. Built-in GPS records location data with each image, and the camera offers professional-grade features including Full HD 1080/60i video capture, continuous shooting at 10 frames per second, and multiple shooting modes such as Auto HDR, Multi-Frame Noise Reduction, and 3D panorama mode.

Additional capabilities include an APS-C sized CMOS sensor with ISO sensitivity up to 25600, in-body image stabilization, face detection and smile shutter technology, and support for RAW image capture. The camera accepts both Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, provides approximately 330 shots per battery charge, and offers full manual controls through P/A/S/M exposure modes alongside automated scene modes for various photography situations.
