The lens features a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range, making it suitable for challenging lighting conditions and shallow depth-of-field work. Its optical design includes aspherical elements, extra-low dispersion elements, and a super extra-low dispersion element to minimize distortion and chromatic aberration while maintaining sharp detail and color accuracy.
The lens incorporates a linear motor autofocus system that delivers fast, quiet, and accurate focusing performance, making it well-suited for both still photography and video work. Weather sealing protects the lens against dust and moisture down to temperatures as low as 14°F, while a fluorine coating on the front element repels water and fingerprints. The de-clickable aperture ring and rounded 11-blade diaphragm enable smooth, quiet control during video recording with pleasant bokeh characteristics.
